According to the Eye Bank Association of India, only 18 of the 720 eye banks house 80% of the nations corneal collections.

Dr. Agarwal′s Eye Bank in Chennai, Hyderabad’s Ramayamma International Eye Bank, KGMU Community Eye Bank in Lucknow, Bengaluru’s Lions International Eye Bank, Eye Bank Society in the city of Jaipur, Dr. Shroff′s Charity Eye Hospital, and the National Eye Bank in Delhi are just a few of the top eye banks in the world. Experts stated that the rest of the eye banks must operate well if the demand for donor corneas is to be met.

Dr. Namrata Sharma, honorary general secretary of EBAI said that the potential of underperforming eye banks needs to be reconsidered and these eye banks should act as collection points for larger eye banks. For long-term success in enhancing eye health, agreements with nearby morgues with active counselling by trained personnel are another aspect that needs to be emphasized.

Dr. J S Titiyal, chief of the RP Eye Centre at AIIMS stated that although the primary duty of an eye bank is to gather and distribute corneas, other duties like training personnel connected to collecting centres and promoting awareness of the need for eye donations are also crucial. The government can aid in the start-up or development of eye banks, but to advance, these facilities must work with NGOs to develop similar initiatives to increase donations.  (ETHealthWorld, Sep 5, 2022)
